The relationship between water and weight loss is sometimes a controversial one. There are those who claim that drinking a lot of water can help you lose weight and keep it off. There are also those who believe that drinking too much water can cause water retention and thus mean you will be putting on weight because of it. This fear of water retention is a possibility but the reality is that most people just don’t drink enough water and increasing their intake can really increase their chances of weight loss.

The Importance of Drinking Enough Water in Your Diet

We are made up mostly of water – it accounts for almost 70% of our bodies. Almost every function in the body requires water so if we don’t have enough we are damaging our health. In order to help digest our food and remove toxins from our body then it is vital that we have enough of this nutrient in our diet.

Water is free of calories but without it we would be dead. As well as keeping our body functioning water can also helps us lose weight because of the following;

  • Drinking water can make us feel less hungry – it is well recognized as an appetite suppressant. Sometimes when we feel hungry it is actually because we are thirsty; the brain can easily mix up these two signals. This is why it is a good idea to drink water when you are feeling hungry because you might not be really hungry at all.
  • Water can help reduce your appetite if you drink a glass before eating a meal. This is because we often don’t feel full even though our body has already taken in too much food. Drinking water before eating means that we won’t have to eat so much before we feel full.
  • We need water in order to digest and process food. This is another reason to drink a glass before we eat.

Will Drinking More Water Help Me Reach My Ideal Weight?

It would be wrong to say that just drinking more water would be enough to help you reach your ideal weight. If that was the case then there would be a lot less obesity in the world. It is a lot more complicated than that but it is true to say that drinking more water is probably going to be part of the solution. The fact is that losing weight involves making quite a few changes in our lives and drinking more water is likely to be part of that. You don’t have to go crazy about it and drink gallons every day because that would lead to problems; drinking a few extra glasses a day though should bring many benefits.
